THIRD TRIAL

[Ashley Blair, the SHSL Witch-in-Training, is dead. She's had her life snuffed out, but how and why? It's a murder both mysterious and menacing.

There's two things I found in there that seemed odd about the corpse itself. The first one is that the gear in Ashley's back was blunt. There was no blood on the machinery, or anything else to indicate she'd been trapped in the equipment, but there was another gear stuck in the wall. I checked, and the wall was normal wood, not something you could easily shove something blunt into.

The other oddity was a note she was carrying. It was typed, so we can't match handwriting...and it said it was from someone who worked for Monobear, but was sick of helping him. It described the location of the hidden room and claimed there was something that could help us.

[He puts the note in question on his podium.]

Obviously, there's no way to be sure right now if the note was telling the truth about either of those claims, so we need to figure out if anyone here could have known about the laboratory.

A note?

[That definitely draws Yomiel's attention. He puts forward the note he found on the cabin door for comparison. They look similar...except one is definitely readable.]

I found some notes on all our doors...but none of them were remotely legible.

Does this mean you guys are going to stop picking on me for my handwriting, then?

[Is it worse than Alastor's own handwriting?]

[Well, both notes are typed for one thing, but the badness of the note doesn't seem it's intentional? There are definitely words and phrases you can make out here and there.]

[Do any of the phrases match the legible letter?]

[The phrases match the note found on Ashley's person, yes.]

Looks like someone tried to send this message to all of us, but most of them got ruined somehow.

[Just how is the letter garbled, anyway? Printer smears? Water damage? Something else?]

[It seems like it might be printer smears, possibly from a printer malfunction or something along those lines.]

And this is why you should always check your documents when they come out of the printer.

I call 'not it' on fixing the thing if anyone wants to print anything out later.

That's-a weird though. If they had time to write post all the letters on our doors, wouldn't they have noticed that most of them were ruined?

Maybe they can't read?

Well, if two people were involved...I guess it's possible one of them was illiterate and couldn't tell, if the one who did the typing never looked at the printed sheets...

Ashley left this note in my mailbox yesterday morning. She wanted me to go with her to the computer room, but I didn't see it until it was too late. It doesn't seem like she knew about the secret laboratory, either.

[Wait a minute.

Waiiit a minute.]

So... so that must-a meant that all the notes on our doors were only put up after she... you know... right?

That doesn't make sense. Why would she have a perfectly intact note, then? If what I heard is true, she had it on her...

And what would be the point in putting up notes on our doors after the murder was done?

I don't know, m-maybe we're-a thinking about this the wrong way?

Or she woke up earlier than the rest of us and saw it first?

But if she tried to send you a note, wouldn't she have-a noticed the other notes and realized that the person tried to send it to everyone?

Well, maybe she didn't check? Also, it happened early in the morning, according to the Monobear File. Maybe it was too dark to see the other notes.

Also, the note isn't addressed specifically to her.

Are you suggesting someone might have planted it, Yomiel?

I don't know, honestly. But why would she just randomly go to the computer lab on her own if it was planted...?

Maybe she thought it'd lead to something. Ashley had a bad habit of spying on people.

Though...is it possible the note was put there after she died?

To throw us off the scent? Maybe, but I don't think there'd be any benefit they couldn't get by giving her the note in the first place.

...Though, I wonder. It's possible the other notes were deliberately illegible to make sure only one person followed them while making it look more like a legitimate offer of help.

I...guess it's possible. But wouldn't the printer need to be tampered with in order to get such a result?
