So the forklift pulls the switch, the switch activates the claw, the claw fires the gun...but what starts the forklift? And I found a board near the pipe, too.

Well I don't-a know if that helps, but the triangle I found looks like it could have supported something.

I doubt they're connected, this one was sticking out of the pipe. But I think Shadow found another board near those empty boxes, didn't you?
