WEEK 2

[Well, well, well! A week into the Smash Life of Mutual Killing and nobody's decided to shed blood yet. It's not exactly pleasant news for your friendly Coach, and believe me, he's not gonna like all this unbridled optimism going on. After everybody's met on Sunday and gathered as much information as they can, it's not like anything bad could happen, right?

Welcome to week 2, Smashers. We're going into Sudden Death.]

[The smell of cooking food is definitely one way to draw a demon's attention. Alastor follows his nose into the kitchen and gives a strained smile when he sees who's at the stove.]

Putting those lessons to the test, huh?

[There's tension in his voice, but he's doing his best to sound confident. Still, his best isn't very good when it comes to hiding his emotions.]

[Mac isn't at a stage where he can cook and talk at the same time...efficiently. Whooops, here goes a stain on the wall when the spoon he's handling almost slips from his hand when Alastor comes in]

Uh, yeah, I am. I really need somethin' to keep myself busy and since this seems to help other people relax I thought it'd do the same to me.

I think it does help.

[The tension doesn't go unnoticed and Mac suspects it's related to the moon that's freaking huge and about to crush their friends. However that's exactly what Mac doesn't want to think about and tries to joke.

Heheh...you're tense. Am I cookin' that badly?

Well, you did just make a bit of a mess.

[He doesn't want to talk about what has him on edge, either. He'll just keep faking that he's fine.]

Try not to leave me too much to clean up when I start cooking, alright?

Hahaha...my bad, my bad. Once I'm done I'll leave everythin' as if I was never here. Other than maybe burned stuff in the trash, hahahaha

[Very fake laughter ensues from Mac. They sure are both trying way too hard to pretend everything is fine]

At least I think I learned a couple tricks from you, just two weeks ago I the quality of this food would have been worse than this. Thank you for that.

Hey, didn't I already say not to mention it? It's just cooking lessons, not that much effort.

You underestimate how meaningful small details may be to other people! I remember once Doc had brought this big box of pizza and...

It's somethin' to do. There's not much to do in this camp, to be honest. I have to think ways to stay entertained or at least busy. Is it true the longer you live the easier it is to be bored?

...You mean easier to get bored? If so, yeah. You'd be amazed how whimsical immortals can be...after a couple thousand years, you'll find entertainment where you can, you know?

'T's part of why I got involved in the whole heroes and villains thing. Never a dull moment.

When you put it like that it makes me glad I'm not immortal. I don' know how I'd cope with havin' to do anythin' for entertainment.

[Here goes a plate of the most recent recipe Mac has tried. Enjoy, although maybe you'll find it has a bit too much salt. Mac takes his own and mulls a bit how to say it]

If you hadn't gotten involved in that or the movies what would you have done? Stare at storms in Thunder Hell for a couple eternities?

Cut back on the salt a bit. Otherwise, not bad.

And if I hadn't gotten involved in the stuff with Movieland...well, I was banished from the underworld, but when I was younger I tended to hang around humans disguised as a nature spirit. Always did find you guys interesting, and the human world always has something new to investigate.

Probably would've done something similar, just wandered around wherever I could get people to tolerate me despite the fact that I can't pass for human and enjoying what modern human culture has to offer.

Less salt, got it.

What's so interestin' about humans? I don' find us particularly, um, interestin', and in stories and the such other beings tend to despise us. I have never understood that.

You're a demon, you tell me how true is that.

[For some reason Mac has asked for Alastor's experiences in life since the beginning of their stay, most likely to get his own life in order. Is he starting to think of Alastor as some sort of mentor? He isn't really sure yet]

Well...it's not really that other demons hate humans, so much as that they see them as weak and worthless. A lot of devils have the attitude that if you can take something from someone, they deserve to lose it. And on top of that, human flesh is a pretty popular food among demons...though I've always preferred, uh...softer meats.

But I think of strength a little differently. I consider human determination and creativity a lot more valuable than raw power. Sure, you guys are weaker and more fragile than demons, but you still manage to do amazing things. You band together and trust each other in ways demons never even think of, and most humans show real courage when things go bad instead of just doing whatever leaves you most likely to survive.

[His smile has become more genuine, real affection for the culture he's describing clear in his voice and body language.]

You live short lives, but maybe that's why you're always moving forward. When demons keep to ourselves, we stagnate. The underworld doesn't have anything like the technology here, because most devils are happy to keep the status quo as long as it means they get to keep their own power. The next generation isn't even a concern...but humans always seem to be thinking about tomorrow, and how to make it better.

Humanity is so much more progressive and compassionate than demonkind, and I guess...I just find it fascinating.

...wow. I never thought it was possible for anybody to think all that from humanity. Maybe I don' see it that way because I'm human but...wow.

I feel strangely proud now, heheheh...

I don' know if it'd be good to say it, but in a way this camp will be a test for us to show that. I was starting to forget that I can't sit around and wait for everythin' to be better. I promise you that for as long as we are in this place I'll do my best to follow all those things you just said.

[And once again he is thinking about the situation including the motive, but instead of wanting to push it out of his mind he is now promising himself that he'll make everything he can to change it. Even if the moon falls he isn't going to let that bring him down]

[He puts a hand on Mac's shoulder, firm and, hopefully, reassuring.]

If there's anything any of us thinks we can do to make things better for each other, we should at least try, right?

No surprise you're here as the school whatever Rival. We may not be rivals but you do know how to get other people fired up and ready to fight anythin'

Heh, I will admit it's something I'm good at. But really, I think it's just that I don't like to see people waste their potential.

A lot of people in this camp have potential. If they get focused surely they could achieve somethin' great in here.

Some of them need more help than others and I'm tryin' to find how I can help them. For example Luigi, he's a hero but he's relyin' way too much on his brother. I'm hopin' he'll realize it soon, because I know he can be great.

[Mac has to admit to himself he's disappointed in Luigi. After all Luigi is more or less somebody he sees as a peer in many ways but Mac definitely doesn't want to think they're too similar]

Yeah, even the handbook just says his talent is being a second banana. But sometimes a person just has to see for themselves what they're capable of. Trial by fire, you know?

I would have thought he had many trials by fire already. He has this king ghost tryin' to kidnap him or somethin' and it sounds to me he had several adventures already. Not like that gross movie from the theater, real adventures.

[Disappointment turning into frustration when people don't end being like he thought they'd be]

Maybe I'm wrong being frustrated and all but it's that I expected somethin' else when I first met him.

'T's possible he thinks what he's done is nothing compared to what other people do. Hero worship gone wrong, or something.

Well, I don' know if I should comment this aloud but his brother seems to get all the attention. Back at my home Luigi's name doesn' even exist but a lot of people knows Mario. That movie's named after his brother, too. And Monobear hasn' given Luigi any breaks either, just look at these device things.

I never thought of how all that would affect him. I have been unjust with him.

Sounds like he might have a bit of the same problem Tsukumo did. Someone else gets all the attention for too long, you start to feel like what you do isn't important. I don't think anyone likes feeling unappreciated.

Tsukumo?

Uh...this is probably gonna sound a bit insane, but Tsukumo is the name of a collective spirit of movie props. They were upset because nobody ever thought about them and they never got the spotlight, figuratively speaking, so they felt like the only role that mattered was an actor's.

...you're right, that sounds insane. But after the last two weeks my concern for realism is in an all time low.

S'ppose they attacked somebody, right? Upset spirits don' sound like somethin' that'd stand aside and do nothin'

And when you're a four thousand year old demon, malicious spirits are kinda par for the course.

They sabotaged the sets, trying to cause 'accidents' to hurt the actors. When that didn't work, they possessed Rachel and picked a more direct fight. Luckily, none of us are normal actors...I'll just say that even the humans can get a bit more into their roles than should be possible.
