This is Not Goodbye

[Well... today hasn't gone super well, and after the trial Luigi mostly kept inside his cabin, full of regret and sorrow.

However, as the sun went down he is struck with an idea. It... wasn't much admittedly, but well, maybe some junk food and bonding can help a little.

Besides he was already getting the feeling that avoiding everyone is exactly what Monobear wants.

A little while later, a note is pinned on the Bulletin Board.]

Hey,

I'm bringing some snacks to the bonfire.

Feel free to join me if you'd like, but don't worry if you don't want to.

[And true to his word, Luigi brought some snacks to the Bonfire in hopes that people join him, a wide variety too. S'mores ingredients, packaged cookies, potato chips, he practically raided the pantry for unhealthy foods.

He also brought some veggies and dip for those who want to be healthier, but do you want to be that guy?]

[There were some people the trial hit harder than others. Callie was obviously one of those people, and it hurt to see her like this. Especially since she had left earlier than the others did. She should have stood behind to comfort her, but she's grateful that Wiitney was able to do it in her stead.

This time, though, she's in a (slightly) better state. Consoling people isn't something she's good at, but...it's worth a shot. Clair gets up from her current seat and then sits next to Callie.]

If you want to talk or you need a shoulder to... [She trails off.] ...I'm here, is what I'm trying to say.

[Callie won't be literally crying on Clair's shoulder, but she will talk to her, sure.]

Back home, me and Marie would get in these competitions over the silliest things. Which flavor of tea is best, whether cats or dogs are better, stuff like that.

One time, we fought over whether it was better to roast marshmallows or hot dogs. I won that one, since I was on team marshmallow which is clearly the better choice, but...

[She frowns as she trails off.]

I wish Marie was here.

[...might not be a good idea to mention she's on team hot dog. Sure, marshmallows are good, but she prefers meat to sweets nine times out of ten.

Wait, that's not important. Admittedly this is kind of difficult for her to relate to. There's not really that many people back home she can fall friends. She's got family, yeah, but her and Lance has a weird relationship and her grandfather is...

...well. At least she has the rest of her team to miss. And [INSERT PROTAG NAME HERE].]

It must be tough, not being able to see those who are so close to you. You and Marie must be together all the time, huh?

Yeah, all the time. Together, we make up the singing group 'The Squid Sisters'. But we're actually cousins, it's just that 'Squid Cousins' didn't have the right ring to it.

We're really close in age too, and our moms are inseparable, so we pretty much grew up together.

It does sound nicer...

[Oops, she really shouldn't mutter to herself.]

A-anyway. I'm glad you and your cousin are so close. No doubt she'll be waiting for you to come home once we get out of here.

[Not "if", but when.]

Yeah, I know, and I can't wait to see her again. But I...We balance each other out, when we're together. All the mistakes I keep making, Marie would be the one to hold me back and think again about stuff. Together we're unstoppable, we would've been out of here the first week I bet, but without her I feel like all my ideas and plans are incomplete.

Mistakes?

[She sounds confused at that.]

You've been holding up pretty well, actually. Don't sell yourself short. Balance is needed and there are things you can't do on your own, but I think you're impressive, Callie. And I don't say that about many people.

[That actually gets a smile about her.]

I've been going over it all in my mind, trying to think of what could have been done differently, what we all missed that could have let us escape. But I guess the answer wouldn't come that easily, huh?

[The vote of confidence does make her feel better, especially coming from someone like Clair, who seems to know what she is doing.]

[Now THAT is rich. Clair herself knows she's many made mistakes here (though granted, some of them are her turning the blame towards herself), but the difference is she keeps them all to herself and makes it seem like her confidence is unwavering. Oh sure, she believes in herself and knows she's capable, but no one's perfect. Not even her.]

Probably not. But we can always discuss. Keep looking for an exit. We'll find it eventually.

[She's talking about the key.]

Oh, right. The key we found. I'd almost forgotten it.

Yeah! Once everyone is feeling a bit better, we should try it out.

Agreed. It probably fits the lock for that door in the camp's store.

...though I doubt Luigi will appreciate that.

[After all, he said he saw a ghost, didn't he? And knowing their luck, the whole place, wherever it is, will be loaded with them.]

Well, we have to try anyway, right? It might lead us out of here. We can just have someone hold his hand, and he'll be okay.

Maybe... Although he did say what he saw was called a Boo. And he seemed familiar with that type of ghost when we first met.

[Just...giving Callie a look that says "I couldn't make this shit up if I tried". Because really, that's such a stupid name.]

The stupidest. Like, at least the bad guys in my world had cool names.

I see. Well, style and presentation are important... Maybe I should remodel my gym once we get out of here...
